We went to the CFA homeschooling orientation today. My husband has recently said “Yes” to an experimental year of homeschooling and before he could change his mind, I wanted to finalize our plans. He comes from a family of educators and selling the idea to him was hard. Even now, he’s very skeptical and I [...]

Suffice it to say that our Tagaytay journey last weekend went beyond our expectations. Why so? Well, we have been to Tagaytay numerous times in the past and, for our 6th wedding anniversary celebration in the country’s second favorite summer capital, we envisioned a typical Tagaytay weekend yearning for nothing more than cooler weather, a [...]

Lipstick-wearing women, you have got to read this! In 2007, the results of a U.S. study by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) on top lipstick brands made news when these products were found to contain detectable levels of lead. 61 percent of those tested (33 lipstick brands) were found to contain lead ranging from [...]

In my previous work, I had the privilege of being able to engage in what I considered meaningful work. Our section was in charge of administering grants for small-scale development projects that benefitted poor communities in the Philippines and a few neighboring countries. Every year, we received numerous applications from farmer groups, people organizations, cooperatives, [...]

I have been wanting to enroll my 4-year old son this summer in a swimming program and have been studying my options. He enjoys dipping in pools and at this point, I think he is ready for formal lessons. The first one I considered was the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman College of [...]

It has been around 9 months since I left my office job in Makati City to become a stay-at-home mother. I really could not have predicted how things would have turned out for me. Before I made this decision, I did a lot of reading on women who have chosen the same path. Some said [...]

Last weekend, my family went on an out-of-town trip get some rest and recreation. It was particularly special because this is our longest vacation ever since the two kids were born. My son, who is turning 5 in June, was very excited about this trip. In the days prior, it was not difficult at all [...]

My family visited Manila Ocean Park recently for the first time since it opened in 2008. We purposely put off our visit because the initial feedback from our friends and acquaintances wasn’t at all encouraging. When it opened, the park was not yet fully operational and there was just the Oceanarium to see. And because [...]

It’s Good Friday and I am here at home. Seeing TV reports on Holy Week activities all over the country reminds me of holy weeks spent in Bulacan many many years ago. Back then, me, my brothers and sisters would be woken up very early on Good Friday at around 5 a.m. or so. We were told that we had to take a bath that early or else we lost the chance of doing so for the rest of the day.
