Finally, our questions have been answered, the anticipation of the first leg over. Will we draw 1-1, 0-0? Will we even score against this Asian powerhouse?
In fairness to the Azkals, we nearly did score in the first half, thanks to Phil Younghusband and Angel Guirado, who played a highly physical game and spent a good deal of time rolling over on the pitch. Don’t worry Angel, I’m pretty sure the powers that be on this part of the globe have noticed your skill and hard work. Though what impresses me most about you, apart from your football skills, is the fact that you know Lupang Hinirang, the Philippine national anthem, by heart! Hope the other foreign-based Azkals take your lead…
Thursday will be a big day. With tattooed Stefan Schrock and Aly Borromeo back, we will be expecting a better showing from the Azkals. Let’s hope the defense will be much tighter and the ball possessions better managed.

As a homeschooling parent, I have accepted the fact that I will be encountering people who will ask, “Are you not depriving you child of socialization?”

That was one of the first questions I asked about homeschooling as well. I guess it is a valid point and the lack of familiarity with homeschooling often drives people to ask this question. To the uninitiated, the term homeschooling could trigger images of a child studying alone and playing by himself. No classmates to chat or interact with and no one to share a snack with at break time…
I’m sure these were the images in this person’s head when she told me recently that I should not have pursued homeschooling.
I’m sure she meant well but…

Ten years ago, I would have stayed up to watch the Wimbledon’s men’s semi-final till match end. But being no longer as young as I used to be, and with two little ones to preserve my energy for, the tennis fan in me had to be content with just the first two sets of the match. I tried to keep my eyes open to catch the first few games of the third but it was close to 2 a.m. and sleep was just too hard to parry. I finally dozed off…
Even at that early stage in the match, husband and I could already predict the outcome. Hubby wanted Murray to win for the sake of making history and, perhaps, satisfying the yearning for a British finalist at Wimbledon. According to my research, the last time this happened was in 1938 when, in all likelihood, Andy Murray’s parents weren’t even born yet. And yet, just like Tim Henman who came before him, a lot sits on the shoulders of this bloke. He is a talented, promising young player who carries the tennis hopes of Great Britain.

This month, my husband lost his eldest brother to laryngeal cancer, a battle that lasted over four years. In spite of the pain and suffering his disease inflicted on his body and brought upon his family, all who knew him will forever remember how he dealt with cancer with courage and dignity.
In fact, in his quest to heal his body, he found spiritual healing. And he generously shared it with those close to him.
Most of his friends and family who visited, and had hoped to reassure and comfort him, left the hospital feeling they gained more from their visit than did the patient.

Did you receive that e-mail talking about how SM Hypermart cheats its customers by displaying a price tag that differs from the price that registers at checkout?

No particular branch of SM Hypermart was singled out. Incidents have been reported at different branches, and those in the provinces are said to guilty, too. There was one case where the customer was charged for an expensive item like a lobster which the customer was sure she did not buy. It turned out, lobsters were not even sold at that particular branch! (Go figure.)
And then there was this other case where the customer bought something on sale at an SM Department Store. Just out of curiosity, he/ she decided to peel off the sticker that SM used to label their “marked down” items. Two women recently decided they’ve had enough and put an end to the things that caused them great misery. These women are known to me personally.

Woman A decided to call it quits after labouring for her employer for nearly 20 years without the benefit of a promotion in rank. She has always been the go-to person at her firm especially in her younger years, serving as the organization’s institutional memory and maintaining cordial relations with the firm’s associates.
Now that she has become one of the senior staff members and too expensive for the firm to maintain – owing to the accumulation of merit and inflationary increases –, every possible offense in the book has been thrown at her, including inefficiency, neglect of duties and such.
She feels that her every move is being watched, every little misstep being put down in writing. This has resulted in sleepless nights and recurring illnesses. Each time she tries to reason with administration, she is asked to submit a formal statement. She suspects that this is harassment of some form but rejects the idea of going through a court battle with her influential and powerful employers. Read the rest of this entry »

Within the span of a week, four homes were robbed in my neighborhood. Thank God nobody perished, was taken hostage or kidnapped.
The community is very, very displeased. The place I live in is a gated community where homeowners pay so-called monthly dues in order to maintain security services for the whole community. This is on top of the protection provided by the local police.

For many years now, this stretch of road which runs from Philcoa to the end of Fairview has registered the most number of accidents in the country but only recently, with the death of noted journalist and educator Lourdes Simbulan, has Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City started earning the label Killer Highway.

I live near Commonweath Avenue. For so long, it was our only viable access to the rest of the metro. Everytime we needed to go out with the kids in the car, I would literally hold my breath until we cleared this dangerous highway.
With the expansion and opening up of Congressional Avenue, we were able to heave a great sigh of relief.
Finally, we had an option. Maybe not always a better one in terms of road and traffic conditions, but at least one with a lower casualty count. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s an acknowledged fact that very few airline passengers pay attention to the safety demonstrations. They either don’t grasp the importance of the safety instructions or those who’ve heard them a hundred times before tend to take them for granted.
And yet, it is part of the airline’s obligation to keep passengers informed about safety. At the very least, they need to be educated so they themselves don’t become threats to flight safety.
The new Philippine Airlines (PAL) safety demonstration video launched in March 2011 is a welcome change from the previous straightforward and serious one. It is faster-paced, employs a bit of theatrics, some humor, more communicative language, and is enhanced by computer graphics. If only for these points, I can bet that more people now pay attention to the safety demo.

The extension of Congressional Avenue in Quezon City was opened several months ago, easing traffic in Tandang Sora Avenue, Commonweath, Elliptical Road, Visayas Avenue and surrounding areas.
This offers a convenient option for motorists bound for Fairview and vice versa as it cuts down travel time significantly.
From EDSA southbound, take the first u-turn slot after Roosevelt Avenue.
Then make the immediate right turn at Congressional Avenue.
Follow the road till the end, make a right turn at Luzon Avenue.
At the end of this short busy strip is the southbound lane of Commowealth Avenue.

This route bypasses Philcoa and the Elliptical Road.
Conversely, if you are coming from Fairview, make a right at Luzon Avenue after Puregold Supermarket.
At the crossroads, tu rn left at Congressional Avenue.
The first intersection is Tandang Sora Avenue.
The next one is Visayas Avenue.
